The ice cap Vestfonna in the northern Svalbard archipelago is one of the largest ice bodies of the European Arctic (∼2400 km 2 ), but little is known about its mass balance. We model the climatic mass balance of the ice cap for the period September 2000 to August 2009 on a daily basis. Ablation is calculated by a spatially distributed temperature-radiation-index melt model.

Vestfonna (Fig. 2) reveal a mean bulk density of Snow depth on De Geerfonna was found to be 388 ⫾ 43 kg m-3 (mean ⫾ one standard deviation) distinctly higher than at comparable terrain eleva- over all 22 snow profiles, which is in good agree- tions on Vestfonna (Table 1). We analysed a 34‐year data record of multi‐spectral satellite imagery in order to study changes in glacier frontal positions of the ice cap Vestfonna. A consistent pattern of almost steady retreat of the southern and north‐eastern outlet glaciers of the ice cap is observed while Franklinbreen, the only major outlet glacier draining towards the north‐west shows re‐advance. In this study we compile and present snow cover information obtained from 22 snow pits that were dug on Vestfonna during this period. Locations are along two transects on the northwestern, land terminating slope of the ice cap, on its central summit, Ahlmann Summit, and at a set of several other locations in the eastern and northern part of the ice cap.

Fieldwork. [5] Between May and June 1995, an electromechanical drill ( Figure 1) was used to obtain an ice core from the top of Vestfonna Ice Cap in Nordaustlandet, Svalbard (79°58′N, 21°01′E, 600‐m a.s.l.). The drilling stopped at the 211‐m depth. Figure 1.

Extensive glaciological field measurements were carried out on the ice cap Vestfonna as well as on the minor ice body De Geerfonna (Nordaustlandet, Svalbard) within the framework of IPY Kinnvika.

Dypvik, Eide, Hamran og Hans E. Amundsen fra Vestfonna Geophysical AS inngår i NASAs vitenskapelige team. De skal jobbe med undersøkelsene som skal gjøres på Mars – i all hovedsak med instrumentet Rimfax. Testet på norsk grunn. UiO-teamet jobber for tiden med hvordan geologisk informasjon kan bli tolket ut av dataene fra Rimfax-radaren.

Introduction: The Radar Imager for Mars' subsur- Vestfonna has a relatively small area of thick slow moving interior ice. It is instead dominated by fast flowing outlet glaciers that extend from the coast to regions close to the ice divide.

The snow pit samples showed that the temperature increased during the winter owing to advection of warm air from the south, and δ18O did not show a seasonal cycle.

Possibly related to this is the report of changing weather conditions according to ice core records from the Swiss Alps. AMASE has arranged annual expeditions on Svalbard since 2003 and is run by Vestfonna Geophysical AS and funded by the Norwegian Space Centre, ESA and NASA.
